BACKGROUND FOR

ON THE DATE WE GOT WRONG

a song about Independence day in the United States

Independence Day in the United States is celebrated on July 4, the date written on
the Declaration of Independence. It is interesting, however, that independence was declared on July 2.  The document was introduced on July 4, but signed by only two
representatives in the Continental Congress. (Some of the signers said that they actually did sign on July 4, but that is disputed.)
Another signing took place on August 2. It is believed that the final document that is on display at the United States National Archives might  possibly be a later copy of the Declaration of Independence... possibly signed as late as 1777.

John Adams, a leader in the Continental Congress believed that July 2 would be the birth date of the new nation. He wrote to his wife:

"The second day of July, 1776, will be the most memorable epoch in the history of America. I am apt to believe that it will be celebrated by succeeding generations as the great anniversary festival. It ought to be commemorated as the day of deliverance, by solemn acts of devotion to God Almighty. It ought to be solemnized with pomp and parade, with shows, games, sports, guns, bells, bonfires, and illuminations, from one end of this continent to the other, from this time forward forever more."

This song is a satire on Independence day and is meant as a bit of fun. In the end I do not believe it   really matters, as the actual date is a trifle. The main thing is that it is a day of celebration in the United States stimulating patriotism and loyalty.
